Description:
The University Certificate is based on a single module at Level 1: An Introduction to Modern Astronomy. The module presents a broad non-mathematical introduction to the subject of astronomy including laboratory techniques and observation.

The University Advanced Certificate is based on two modules at Level 2. To qualify for the award of the Advanced Certificate students must successfully complete the following modules: AA2061 Astronomy Laboratory (standard module) (held at the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics Alston Observatory); AA2281 Exploring the Solar System (half module); AA2061 Student Initiated Credit in Astronomy (half module).

Assessment may include: Coursework.

Media and methods employed: Printed text, tutorial support, internet/WWW/email.
For students who do not have access to a telescope and photographic equipment to complete the observational experiments, there is a weekend course held at the Alston Observatory.
